One of the first goals of this campaign was to educate people about the 4C's (cut, carat, color, and clarity) of diamonds. In 1947 the slogan "A diamond is forever" was given. Eventually, the De Beers campaign tried to persuade the consumer that buying an engagement ring is essential and a diamond is the only acceptable stone for a women's ring. Diamond sales in the United States increased from $23 million to $2.1 billion between 1939 and 1979.
